What Is DDP Shipping? Tax-Included Lines Explained

Agent websites throw around "DDP", "tax-free", "tariffless" and "tax-included line" as if they were interchangeable. They overlap, but they do not mean the same thing, and the difference decides whether money is collected from you at the door.

The two terms that matter

DDP — Delivered Duty Paid. An Incoterm. The seller (here, the party arranging carriage) is responsible for delivering the goods with import duty and taxes already paid. You receive the parcel and pay nothing further.

DDU / DAP — Delivered Duty Unpaid. Freight is arranged, but duty and taxes are not covered. The carrier pays them on your behalf at the border and then collects from you, usually adding a handling fee.

When an agent calls a line "tax-included" or "DDP", they are promising the first: no charge at the door.

What "tariffless" usually means

"Tariffless" is marketing language popularised by agents serving the US and EU. It generally describes a line where duty has been pre-settled, so the recipient does not face a customs bill. In effect it is a DDP line, often using a commercial consolidation channel that clears shipments as a batch.

Two honest caveats:

  1. "Tariffless" is not a customs status. It is a commercial promise by the line operator. If the line fails, you are the one holding a parcel with a bill.
  2. It does not mean "no rules". Restricted and prohibited goods are still restricted and prohibited. See our policy.

What a DDP line actually covers

CostCovered by DDPNotes
Import dutyincluded in the freight you paid
Import VAT / sales taxusually ✅depends on the line; ask, do not assume
Customs inspection✅ (as a process)you are not charged for it
Carrier handling feethis is the fee DDP is really protecting you from
Goods restricted at importseizure is not compensated
Duty on a wrong declared valuedo not under-declare

The carrier handling fee is the detail buyers most often miss. On a cheap parcel, a €15–20 handling fee can be a bigger hit than the VAT itself.

When DDP is worth paying for

  • Low-value goods. A DDU line plus a handling fee can cost more than a DDP line's freight difference.
  • You want a predictable landed cost. DDP turns "somewhere between X and X + unknown" into a single number you agreed to before shipping.
  • Frequent, small orders. The admin and unpredictability of DDU multiply.
  • Electronics and anything with duty above a few percent.

When a non-DDP line makes sense

  • High-value goods with low duty and a buyer who is comfortable handling a customs bill.
  • Heavy, bulky hauls by sea where a DDP air line is not the right mode anyway and you are prepared for the import formalities.
  • Business buyers who reclaim VAT. If you are VAT-registered, paying the import VAT yourself and reclaiming it may be preferable — a DDP line that quietly absorbs VAT gives you nothing to reclaim.

That last point is real: a DDP line is often the wrong choice for a VAT-registered business, because you lose the reclaimable input tax.

How to tell whether a line is really DDP

Ask four questions:

  1. Is destination duty and VAT included, or just duty?
  2. Is the carrier's handling fee included?
  3. If customs assesses the shipment anyway, who pays?
  4. Which countries is the DDP treatment available for?

If the answer to any of these is vague, treat the line as DDU and budget for a bill.

Our position

We quote four delivery-speed tiers rather than naming carriers, and the tier we label as the balance point (typically 8–14 days) is the tax-included one. When we quote you, the freight figure for that tier is the total you pay — there is no second invoice from the carrier.

We do not claim we can make a prohibited item clear customs, and we do not guarantee a customs outcome on any line. If your parcel is assessed, we send you the documentation we hold and help you respond.
