Taobao shipping to the UK: times, costs and customs
Getting a Taobao parcel to the UK is two problems stacked on top of each other: the flight, and the border. Most guides cover the first and skip the second, which is where parcels actually get stuck. Here is both.
Transit options
| Line | Transit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 5-7 days | 5–7 days | Direct air freight — fastest, higher cost |
| 8-14 days | 8–14 days | Tax-included line — best balance of speed and price |
| 15-22 days | 15–22 days | Economy channel — cheaper, for non-urgent orders |
| 23-35 days | 23–35 days | Sea / postal — lowest freight, longest transit |
Transit starts at dispatch, not at order. Customs clearance time is separate and not something any carrier can promise.
How the freight is priced
Chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight — length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6000. A duvet shipped in its original box is priced by the box, which is often three times its real weight. We unpack, remove filler and re-measure before quoting; that single step is usually worth more than any discount.
One parcel is cheaper than several, because the fixed cost per shipment dominates at small sizes. That is what consolidation is for, and why 90 days of free storage exists.
The border: what happens at £135
Since Brexit the UK runs its own import regime, and the threshold that matters is £135. Under current rules, consignments valued at or below £135 have VAT collected at the point of sale. Above £135, VAT — and duty, where the goods attract it — is charged at import, along with the courier's handling fee. You are the importer, so that bill arrives with you, not with us.
Two practical consequences. First, splitting one £200 order into two £100 parcels is not a loophole — it is a decision that changes who collects the VAT and how much handling you pay, and it can look like evasion. Second, we declare the real value. Under-declaring to shave the bill is the most common cause of seizure, and it leaves you with no claim when the parcel disappears.
Rules and thresholds change. Treat this page as orientation and confirm the current position with HMRC before ordering anything expensive.
What cannot travel
These are carrier and border restrictions, not our preferences — we would rather tell you now than after the parcel is refused:
Lithium batteries and power banks
Loose cells and high-capacity power banks are refused by most air carriers. A device with an installed battery is often fine; a spare battery in the box usually is not.
Liquids, aerosols and powders
Cosmetics, vape liquid, perfume and supplements fall under dangerous-goods rules and cannot travel on standard air freight.
Food and medicine
Most foodstuffs and all medicines are restricted into the UK without specific certification. This is a border rule, not our preference.
Branded counterfeits
Counterfeit goods are seized and destroyed, and the consignee can be pursued. We will not ship them, and we will tell you if a listing looks like one.
Not sure whether your item qualifies? Ask before you buy — checking takes a minute, a refused parcel takes weeks.
Questions
- Do I pay VAT on a Taobao parcel?
- It depends on the value. Under current UK rules, consignments valued at £135 or less have VAT collected at the point of sale; above £135, VAT and any applicable duty are charged at import, plus the courier's handling fee. Rules change — check HMRC before you order, and assume you are the importer.
- Can you mark it as a gift or a lower value?
- No. Under-declaring is the single most common reason parcels are seized, and it leaves you with nothing to claim against. We declare what you actually paid.
- How is shipping calculated?
- By chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 6000, in centimetres). Bulky light items are therefore priced by size, not by the scale. We remove excess packaging before weighing.
- What happens if customs holds my parcel?
- The courier contacts you for payment or documentation. We supply the commercial invoice and any product information requested. We cannot pay duty on your behalf, and we cannot speed up a customs inspection.
- How long does it actually take?
- Transit is 5-7 days / 8-14 days / 15-22 days / 23-35 days, counted from dispatch. Add the time to buy the item and get it to our warehouse, which varies with the seller. Customs clearance is outside both numbers.
