Shipping from Taobao to the UK: VAT, Customs and Delivery Tiers

Since Brexit, goods entering the UK from China face a customs border that did not use to exist. That is the single most important thing to understand before choosing a delivery tier — more important than the transit time printed on the label.

Why the tax-included tier matters more here

For most parcels, UK VAT is due at the point of import, and where a marketplace or carrier handles it, the VAT is collected at checkout. When an independent parcel arrives, the carrier pays the VAT to HMRC and then bills you — often with a handling fee on top of the VAT itself.

That combination is the unpleasant surprise: a low-value item can arrive with a charge that is a meaningful fraction of the goods' value.

So on UK-bound orders, the practical choice is:

• 8–14 day tax-included (DDP) line — duty and VAT are built into the freight we quote. You pay nothing on the doorstep. For most UK buyers this is the right default, and it is why we label it the recommended tier.
• Other lines — cheaper freight, but VAT and the carrier's handling fee are collected from you on delivery. Sometimes still worth it on high-value, low-duty goods; do the arithmetic before choosing.

We cannot guarantee a customs outcome on any line, and we are not your customs adviser. If the total landed cost must be predictable, choose the tax-included tier.

Chargeable weight — the UK is strict about this

Freight is billed on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight:

volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6000

A 50 × 40 × 30 cm carton is 10 kg volumetric before anything is inside it. From China to the UK, air freight is the norm for anything urgent, and space is expensive, so volumetric pricing bites hard.

What to do about it: remove shoeboxes, vacuum-compress soft goods, ask for a tighter carton. Both are optional services, and on bulky clothing the weight saved usually exceeds the service fee. Our volumetric weight guide has the arithmetic.

Delivery tiers

Transit begins when the parcel leaves our warehouse. Add roughly 3–7 days before that for sourcing and inspection.

Where UK deliveries get stuck

1. Customs clearance at the port of entry. Routine and unavoidable; complete declarations help.
2. VAT and handling fee collection. The carrier holds the parcel until the charge is paid. On a non-DDP line, pay promptly or the parcel is returned.
3. Local delivery. Royal Mail and the regional couriers are generally good, but rural addresses and flats without a clear entry system are where attempts fail. Make sure the address includes the flat number and the postcode exactly.
4. Restricted goods. The UK restricts food products, liquids, batteries and anything regulated. Our prohibited items policy lists the categories; if you are unsure, ask before paying.

Cost-saving moves specific to the UK

• Consolidate. Three parcels become one, and freight is charged per parcel. You have 90 days of free storage to accumulate a haul.
• Drop one tier if you can wait. The gap between 8–14 and 15–22 days is often the largest single saving available.
• Buy insurance on anything hard to replace. 3% of declared value, minimum ¥15, covers loss and transit damage — see Insurance & Compensation. Even insured, compensation is capped; declare the real value.
• Watch the item, not just the freight. On lower-value goods the freight can exceed the item price. That is worth knowing before you order, not after.

A 1.5 kg haul of clothing, packed into a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box:
