Shipping from Taobao to the USA: Speeds, Duties and What to Expect

Distance is not the problem between China and the United States. Hand-offs are. A parcel typically passes through: the seller's courier inside China → our warehouse → a line-haul to the departure airport → customs export → the flight → US customs → a domestic carrier → your door.

Knowing where the time goes makes the delivery tiers much less mysterious.

The four tiers, in practice

We quote four speeds rather than naming airlines, because the carrier we can book changes week to week with capacity and price.

TierWhat it usually isWhen to choose it
5–7 daysExpress air, priority handlingyou need it now and will pay for it
8–14 daysTax-included air linethe balance most buyers pick
15–22 daysEconomy air consolidationnon-urgent, meaningful saving
23–35 daysSea or postalheavy, bulky, not time-critical

Two honest caveats:

  • Transit time starts when the parcel leaves our warehouse, not when you place the order. Sourcing from the seller and inspecting the goods comes first, and that is usually 3–7 days.
  • Tracking goes quiet in the middle. Between the Chinese export scan and the first US scan there can be several days with no update. This is normal and is not evidence of a lost parcel.

Duties, taxes and de minimis

The United States has historically allowed low-value shipments in duty-free under the de minimis rule. Its scope has been under active revision — thresholds and eligibility have changed in recent years, and further changes have been legislated.

What this means for you in practice:

  • Lines we market as tax-included (DDP) have destination duty built into the freight we quote. If the shipment is dutiable, the line absorbs it and you pay nothing on delivery. This is the safest option if you want a predictable total cost.
  • Other lines may attract duty or a customs fee on arrival. The carrier bills you, not us.
  • You are the importer of record. We cannot pay your duty on your behalf on a non-DDP line, and we cannot guarantee a customs outcome.

Because de minimis rules are moving, we do not print a threshold on this page and pretend it is stable. The tier labels we quote are based on rules as they stood when the line was contracted. If a parcel is assessed, we will send you whatever documentation we have.

What actually causes delays

Ranked by how often we see them:

  1. Customs inspection — routine, adds days, nothing to be done. Complete and accurate declarations reduce the chance of being pulled aside.
  2. Seller dispatch delay — the seller takes a week to hand the goods to a courier. We chase, but we cannot control it.
  3. Peak season — late October through mid-December, and around Chinese New Year in February, capacity tightens and transit times stretch.
  4. Battery or liquid items — restricted to specific lines, which frequently depart less often.
  5. Address problems — an apartment number omitted, a ZIP mismatch. Carriers attempt delivery once or twice and then return the parcel to us.

Practical advice

Declare the real value. On a tax-included line the declared value determines your insurance ceiling and nothing else — under-declaring only hurts you if the parcel is lost.

Consolidate your orders. Freight is charged per parcel, so three items shipped separately cost far more than the same three shipped together. You get 90 days of free storage, which is ample time to accumulate a haul. See how to reduce shipping cost.

Check volumetric weight before committing. A large, light parcel to the US is priced by the space it occupies. This catches out buyers of pillows, down jackets and plush toys every single week — see volumetric weight explained.

Photograph the box before opening it if it arrives damaged. It is the difference between a paid claim and a rejected one. Our rules are in Insurance & Compensation.

Worked example: a two-item haul to California

Itemsjacket (0.9 kg) + sneakers (1.1 kg)
Actual weight2.0 kg
Box40 × 30 × 20 cm → volumetric 4.0 kg
Chargeable weight4.0 kg (the greater)
Tier chosen8–14 days, tax-included
Freightquoted after we measure the packed parcel

The lesson in that table: the box, not the goods, decided the price. Removing the shoebox or shipping in a tighter carton can cut the chargeable weight substantially.
