How to Reduce International Shipping Cost: 7 Moves That Actually Work

Freight is the largest line on most agent invoices, and the one buyers understand least. These seven moves are ordered by how much they save in practice — not by how easy they are to describe.

1. Consolidate into a single parcel

Typical saving: 30–50% on a multi-item haul.

Freight is charged per parcel. Minimum charges and handling fees apply per shipment. Two parcels of 2 kg cost substantially more than one of 4 kg.

This is the whole reason agents offer free storage. With 90 days free, you can buy from Taobao this week, 1688 next week, and ship everything together a month later.

Caveat: do not consolidate dense goods with bulky ones if you are near a billing bracket. Sometimes two well-packed parcels beat one badly-packed one. Run the numbers with our volumetric weight guide.

2. Cut volumetric weight with repacking

Typical saving: 20–70% on bulky items.

Chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so a light item in a big box is billed for the box. Removing shoeboxes and vacuum-compressing soft goods is usually the highest-return paid service available.

ItemBeforeAfter repacking
Two pairs of sneakers6.6 kg chargeable3.6 kg
Pillow in a large carton8.0 kg chargeable2.0 kg
Duvetoften 3× actual weightnear actual weight

Remember that repacking does not help dense goods — a box of books is billed on actual weight and will not get cheaper.

3. Drop one delivery tier

Typical saving: 20–40% of the freight.

The gap between the tax-included tier and the economy tier is frequently larger than any discount code. Ask yourself honestly whether eight extra days matter. For most non-gift orders, they do not.

TierWhy you would choose it
5–7 daysa deadline, or a small high-value item
8–14 daysthe default balance, tax included
15–22 daysthe sweet spot for non-urgent orders
23–35 daysheavy or bulky goods, planned well ahead

4. Do not ship air

Typical saving: 40–60% on heavy goods.

Anything over roughly 10 kg or bulky enough to be billed volumetrically is usually far cheaper by sea or postal consolidation. The transit time is longer, but if you are restocking rather than needing something this week, air freight on heavy goods is money set alight.

Rule of thumb: dense and heavy → sea. Small and urgent → air.

5. Buy the item price right

Typical saving: 10–40% of the goods cost — often more than the freight saving.

Freight optimisation is pointless if you overpaid for the goods:

  • Compare platforms. 1688 is often 20–40% below Taobao on commodity goods; see our 1688 guide.
  • Check the seller's actual listing price against what you were charged for the item.
  • Look at the exchange rate used. A quiet 4% spread on the conversion is a fee by another name.

6. Time your shipment

Typical saving: 10–30% versus peak.

Capacity tightens and rates rise from late October into mid-December, and again around Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February, dates move annually). Sellers and factories also close for roughly a week to ten days around the New Year, and warehouses are slower.

If your order is not urgent, shipping in early October or late February is measurably cheaper.

7. Declare the value honestly and insure properly

This one is not about saving money — it is about not losing it.

  • Never under-declare to dodge duty on a non-DDP line. If the parcel is picked up, you pay the duty plus a penalty, and the delay costs more than the duty.
  • Do insure anything hard to replace. 3% of declared value, minimum ¥15, covers loss and transit damage. Uninsured, a lost parcel settles at whatever the carrier allows, which is often a fraction of the value.
  • Compensation is capped, so declaring a realistic value is what sets your ceiling. See Insurance & Compensation.

What does not save money

  • Buying the cheapest possible packing. A crushed parcel is a total loss, and the freight was already paid.
  • Splitting a haul into many small parcels to "avoid customs". Each parcel has a minimum charge and a fresh chance of a handling fee. This usually costs more and increases scrutiny.
  • Choosing the fastest tier "to be safe". Speed and reliability are different things; a well-packed parcel on the economy tier arrives intact too.
  • Asking for the smallest decimal on the scale. Weight is measured, not negotiated.

The saving comes from three moves working together — consolidation, volumetric reduction, and tier selection. None of them requires a discount code.
