How to Buy from Taobao in English (2026 Guide)
Taobao is the world's largest consumer marketplace — and it is effectively closed to anyone who does not read Chinese. There is no genuine English version, most sellers do not accept international cards, and the platform does not ship overseas.
This guide is the workaround, end to end.
Why you cannot just use Taobao directly
Three hard blockers:
- Language. Search, listings, chat with the seller and after-sales are all in Chinese. Machine translation of a product page is survivable; negotiating a return is not.
- Payment. Domestic sellers typically accept Alipay with a Chinese bank account, or WeChat Pay. An overseas card will usually be declined. Some sellers accept the international version of Alipay, but coverage is patchy.
- Shipping. Taobao delivers inside China. It does not address international parcels. To get your goods abroad you need an address in China that forwards.
A shopping agent solves all three at once: they read Chinese, they pay with a domestic account, and they have a warehouse.
Step 1 — Find the item
Search Taobao in Chinese, or browse and copy the listing link. Two practical tips:
- Search with short, concrete nouns. "羽绒服" beats "warm winter coat for men". Translate a keyword with any dictionary, not a sentence.
- Use image search if you have a photo. Taobao's camera search is excellent and bypasses vocabulary entirely. If your agent supports keyword and link input, you can also ask them to find a match — we accept both links and keywords.
Copy the link. On mobile, use the share menu and copy the URL; both the long item.taobao.com link and the short m.tb.cn links work.
Step 2 — Understand what you are buying
Three things trip up overseas buyers:
Sizes run small. A Chinese XL is roughly a European L or an American M. Always read the size chart in centimetres and measure a garment you already own.
"Original" does not mean what you think. Taobao is flooded with unbranded goods that imitate designs, and with genuine goods sold by authorised resellers. Brands like Uniqlo, Li-Ning or Xiaomi have official flagship stores. If you want genuine, buy from the flagship store and expect to pay a normal price.
Beware of listings far below market price for a branded item. It is either a replica or a bait listing.
Step 3 — Pick a variant and submit
Taobao listings have variants (colour, size, model) which exist only as Chinese dropdown text. This is where most self-service attempts break down.
With us, the product page shows the variants as selectable buttons — the options come straight from the listing, translated. Choose one, set a quantity, and add it to your parcel. If the link cannot be parsed, you can place a manual order and paste the details.
Step 4 — Fill in your delivery details and pick a speed
Enter recipient name, phone, province/state, city, street address, postcode and country. Then choose a delivery-speed tier rather than a named courier:
- 5–7 days — express air
- 8–14 days — tax-included line, the usual choice
- 15–22 days — economy
- 23–35 days — sea or postal
No payment happens at this stage. You are submitting a confirmation, not an order.
Step 5 — Wait for the freight quote
We buy nothing until you have a number. Our team weighs up what you selected, checks the destination and the tier, and emails you a full cost breakdown: item price, domestic shipping, service fee and the international freight.
Review it. If the freight is higher than you expected, you can switch tiers, drop an item, or remove packaging to cut weight. Then confirm — and only then do you pay.
Step 6 — We buy, you inspect
The seller ships to our warehouse in China. Everything that arrives is registered, weighed and photographed. You get three free photos per item, and you can buy extra detail shots or a power-on test for electronics.
This step matters more than newcomers expect. It is your only chance to catch a wrong size, a wrong colour or a defect before the item crosses a border, because returning something from abroad is rarely economic.
Step 7 — Consolidate and ship
Items sit in your warehouse for up to 90 days free. Buy from three different sellers over three weeks, then ship them as one parcel — that is where the real saving is, because international freight is charged by the parcel, not per item.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Ordering a size based on your usual one | garment too small; returns from abroad are uneconomic |
| Ignoring volumetric weight | bulky items cost far more than expected |
| Choosing the fastest tier by default | often 2–3× the freight for a few days' difference |
| Not declaring a real value on an expensive item | compensation capped at whatever the carrier allows |
| Assuming a "free shipping" listing includes international postage | it means delivery inside China |
Next step
Paste a Taobao link into the box on our homepage, or read how freight is calculated first if weight-based pricing is new to you. If you are buying from 1688 instead, we have a separate guide.
