How to Buy from 1688 (China's Wholesale Marketplace) from Abroad

1688 is Alibaba's domestic wholesale platform. It is where a large share of the sellers you see on Alibaba.com actually source their stock. The same factory, the same item, often a fraction of the export price — with three catches: it is Chinese-only, it sells in bulk, and it does not ship abroad.

If you are buying to resell, or buying several of something, 1688 is usually worth the extra friction.

Why 1688 is cheaper than Alibaba.com

Alibaba.com is the export channel. Sellers there price in USD, quote FOB terms, handle export documentation and expect foreign buyers. 1688 is the domestic channel: prices in RMB, no export overhead, competing against domestic wholesalers on price alone.

The gap is real but not uniform. On commodity goods — phone cases, cables, basic apparel, packaging — the difference is often 20–40%. On items with certification requirements the gap narrows or reverses, because the export seller has already paid for the compliance work.

The three catches

1. Minimum order quantities

Many 1688 listings sell in lots: 2 pieces, 10 pieces, 1 carton of 60. Some accept a single unit; many do not, and the seller will simply cancel a one-piece order.

Read the listing's 起订量 (minimum order quantity). If it is 2 or 5, fine. If it is 500, this is not the right item for a personal order.

2. No English interface

Search, variants, seller chat and after-sales are all Chinese. Machine translation gets you 80% of the way; the remaining 20% is where orders go wrong.

3. It ships inside China only

1688 has no international parcel service. You need a Chinese address that forwards — which is what an agent's warehouse is for.

Step by step

1. Find the listing. Search 1688 in Chinese, or find the item on Alibaba.com first and search its Chinese name on 1688 to compare. Copy the detail.1688.com link.

2. Check the seller, not just the price. Look at 回头率 (repeat-buyer rate) and years in business. A high repeat rate matters more than a marginally lower price — on 1688 you have no dispute mechanism that works from overseas.

3. Confirm the MOQ and the variant. Wholesale listings often have several material grades at different prices (e.g. "普通款 / 加厚款"). The cheapest option is frequently not what the photos show.

4. Place the order through your agent. Paste the link, select the variant and the quantity, and fill in your delivery details. Your agent pays the seller with a domestic account.

5. Take the inspection seriously. This is the step where wholesale orders live or die. With multiple units of the same item, defects are systematic: a batch with a misaligned logo has 60 units with a misaligned logo. Ask for photos covering several units, not one, and buy extra photos if the order value justifies it.

6. Consolidate. Wholesale orders are heavy. Ship them together, choose a slower tier, and expect volumetric weight to be the deciding cost factor.

1688 vs Alibaba.com vs Taobao

For a single item for personal use, Taobao is cheaper and easier. For 20 units of something, 1688 usually wins even after agent fees.

What to watch for

• Certification. If you are importing electrical goods, toys, cosmetics or anything regulated, the 1688 listing will not have the CE / FCC / FDA work done. Alibaba.com sellers often will. Budget for compliance or buy from the export channel.
• Branded goods. 1688 has the same counterfeit problem as any Chinese marketplace. If you are importing to resell, buying counterfeits is a customs and legal risk in your own country, not just a platform problem. We refuse to buy them — see prohibited items.
• Consolidated cartons. A full carton is dense and heavy. Check the volumetric weight implications before committing to a shipping tier.
